Wii Fit review
I think the Wii Fit is a great start to an anti aging fitness routine, especially if you are shy of going to the gym or don’t wish to pay for a personal trainer to get fit at home.
It’s much more fun than I ever imagined it would be. And fitness has to be fun. Otherwise you won’t keep it up.
To use the Wii Fit program you’ll first need a Nintendo Wii games console (which you can also use for

My daughter introduced me to this. I had originally heard about the games console and thought it was not for me. However, I really like this keep-fit package and, with the brain exercises, it has a dual anti-aging purpose, which makes it better value for money!
Once you have the games console, you can buy the Wii Fit package, which includes a balance board. You place this in front of your TV screen and it connects wirelessly to the console.
You exercise on this board, which has a weight limit of 150 kg.
The setup process is not complicated. Using sensors in the board, it measures both your weight and body mass index (BMI) and checks your balance and fitness levels. It then tells you your ‘Wii fitness age’ and determines if you are under or overweight. I found the balancing exercise a tiny bit difficult to understand at first and so it started out giving me a “Wii fitness age” I didn’t like much!
You are guided through the process and your data is stored. You also set an achievable date to reach your target BMI. You use a virtual “Mii” avatar and it will change shape with you as your anti aging fitness routine improves. Cute!
Then you can get started on your anti aging fitness regime from the comfort of your own home.
Wii Fit offers four types of workout – yoga, muscle conditioning, aerobics and balance.
In total there are 40 different exercises and games – although they are not all available immediately. Persevere with the fitness routines and you are rewarded with new ones.
For the yoga and muscle conditioning, you choose an interactive coach, who guides you through the exercises and yoga poses, while the balance board registers your moves and rates your progress.
Balance and aerobics skill is built up with a selection of games, some more fun than others.
Balance games include slalom skiing (where you can crash and not hurt yourself, which I appreciated having broken my wrist learning to ski on real snow!), heading virtual footballs (and furry animals!) that zoom towards you from the screen, and walking a tightrope – or falling off in my case!
My daughter and her cartoon graphic were yards ahead of me when I took to the 3D jogging track through a virtual park but I kept up with her (just about) when we both took part in a group step aerobics class.
I did quite well with the virtual hoola hoop too. A strange experience but great for the waistline!
My husband also made himself a “Mii” avatar and joined us on some of the exercises. Interestingly in others his avatar was also there in the background, joining in the classes while not recording any points for him. It made the games all the more amusing and turned it into good all-round family fun as well as anti aging exercise.
All in all, I can recommend the Wii Fit and thank my daughter for introducing me to it.
If you’ve tried the Wii Fit Nintendo package, please tell us how you got on with it. Or if you can review another anti aging fitness package or DVD work-out, please do so here.
